My trip to the San Diego Zoo

BradScottPhoto.com
Gorillas

When I first got to the zoo I was really excited to see the snow leopard and the black panther. On the way to see the big cats I saw the gorillas. I ended up staying there for about an hour. I was absolutely fascinated by them. I felt as though I was doing a lifestyle photo shoot of a model. The expression in there faces and the way they interacted with each other was amazing. T. hey were so fun to photograph. There eyes were so intense. While I was taking photographs there was a small toddler aged gorilla that was quite the little punk. He walked up to the huge silver back gorilla and threw dirt in his face while the big guy was eating. I thought I was going to witness a murder. The silverback just placed his hand firmly on the young gorillas shoulder and gave him the most intimidating look I have ever seen in my life. The little one left him alone after that haha. I also saw the grandma gorilla picking flowers and doing a bit of gardening. They were really like watching a reality tv show of a normal family. Only they were much larger and had much more hair. It had to be one of the most interesting subjects I had ever photographed. And being a Surf photographer and fine art photographer I see some really interesting things.

Surf Photographers in Hawaii

The North Shore of Oahu is the surf mecca of the world. Every surf photographer in the whole world knows that if they want to get shots of monstrous waves and clean barrels than the North Shore is the spot. Hawaii is such a great spot to live with all of the different activities to do with your friends and family. You can wake up early in the morning and go for a surf or a swim or maybe just a nice morning run on the beach to wake yourself up. The North Shore is the spot to be for all surf enthusiasts. When it comes to Surf Photographers in Hawaii there are plenty of them. The Surf Photography industry is very competitive and you either have to know the right people to get your foot in the door or you have to have some new innovative way of shooting. Something new something inspiring for people to look at and say wow that picture is amazing. Surf magazines often use images more than once and all of us surf photographers get a bit sick of that unless its our picture of course. If you are a Photographer that is looking to move to Hawaii then just do it. Dreams can become your reality they are only an action away. You might think oh If I was a surf photographer in Hawaii then I would have to compete with the guys that are already well known. This is very true but what if you have that different perspective that nobody has scene before. It takes drive and determination to get to the top of the Photography world. My exgirlfriends friends mother a lady named Stefanie Riedel absolutelyloved.com is the number one wedding photographer in Hawaii. Her images capture love and friendship that lasts a lifetime. I asked her what I could do to improve my Photography skills and she said Brad. As long as you love Photography and you keep that passion strong all you have to do is continue striving to "get the shots" and you will one day bump into the person who says wow. I love your photography can I hire you for a project. Another thing with any type of artist looking to strive in a competitive industry is to be friendly. ALWAYS. I don't care if you had a bad day and something is bothering you you never know who you are talking to. They might look like they don't have money and you think oh this person is never going to buy my photos but you have to remember most people that come to Hawaii are on vacation. They don't want to have to dress up all the time they come here to relax and enjoy the mellow atmosphere. So never judge a book by its cover. And don't be afraid to talk to Photographers that are already well known. Go up to them and introduce yourself and ask questions. Sound like you are extremely interested and you never know they might like your drive and ask you to come intern with them. Thats how I scored my first job as a Surf Photographer. I walked up to Erik Ippel with Ippel films who is a world renound surf videographer. I said do you mind if I take a couple shots of you as he was coming out of the water with his huge water housing. I introduced myself and said hi my name is Brad I think you have the coolest job in the world. I am new to the scene and I am trying to get started in the Surf photography world. He liked my attitude and now we have teamed up. Photography is not very political and most Photographers are very friendly. They have to be that's how they get clients and jobs. Anyways this is Brad Scott of bradscottphoto.com checking out and hoping everyone has a great day filled with fun surfing, barrelings waves, big airs and try not to get pounded to bad. Surfs up get out there and catch some and Let me know if you would like pics. I got you covered.
I think it is many peoples dream job to become a surf photographer. Surf photographers get to hang out on the beach and look at girls all day. They get to play in the waves and witness some of the best surfing up close. Meet amazing athletes like Kelly Slater and Rob Machado. The question everyone always asks is How. How do I get your job as a surf photographer or how did you get started as a surf photographer. Was it hard to get a job being a surf photographer. How do you get paid as a surf photographer do you sell your surf photos to magazines or to individual surfers or to companies and the answer is you do all of that. The more you talk to people and network the more you can earn. The key in finding jobs that are fun is make sure you really show passion and enthusiasm when you are talking to people about it. They might try to help you out. Its all about who you know. If you love photography you will learn as you go and your equipment will become better and better. A few tips on getting started as a surf photographer is always purchase the glass first. The lens of the camera will let you get the zoom you need to be able to see the surfers you are taking photos of. Obviously you will need a digital slr camera. I prefer canon and nikon cameras. They have interchangeable lenses for all of there different cameras. Another tip is that sometime the newest camera out is not always the best. The canon 40d has been around for quite a while now and it is one of the nicest cameras to use and you don't have to pay the huge dollar amount to get your hands on one. If you are more interested in being in the water as a surf photographer which is actually more money but also much more dangerous you will need to research good water housings that won't break on you. If you water housing breaks so does you whole camera setup so be careful. Always take care of your gear clean the lens daily and make sure there is no salt on the lens. The ocean air will coat your lens over time and your pictures won't be as clear and sharp. If you really want to be a surf photographer you need to work on your communication skills as well. It is almost half the battle just meeting the contacts you need to be successful in this industry. As I said its all about who you know. Someone might be looking to do an ad and if you are the one that they think of when there brainstorming than you are in. If you don't talk to anyone you won't get anywhere. Always be friendly and say hi to people on the beach or water. Get a website as soon as you can and also business cards are key. If you don't have a name or website to give people that is easy to memorize then people will forget where to go to look at the photos. Surf photography is such a fun profession. The people I have met and the days of endless sun and awesome waves to watch are just amazing. It really lets you be creative and work with people and the environment to create images that are both beautiful and exciting. There are so many possibilities for travel if you are a photographer. You can take photos anywhere so you are never tied down to a certain place. I hope you are inspired by this blog. It is my passion and I love to share it with people.
Aloha

North Shore

The North Shore of Oahu is one of the most incredible places in the world. The amount of surf breaks in such a small radius is rediculous. You can literally just walk down the beach for miles and run into new breaks the whole way. Some popular surf breaks on the North Shore that you may have heard of are Bonzai Pipeline, Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach, Haleiwa Beach Park, Vland, Ehukai, Rocky Point, Back Door, Off the Wall and they are all amazing in there own unique way. The attitude on the North Shore is very low key and mellow. As long as you respect the Locals and don't give them attitude or drop in on them you will be fine. It is all about respect. If you are littering or hogging waves they won't put up with that. Basically the North Shore is very fair. If you deserve to get a beating you will. If you are respectful and always be friendly to everyone you will have the time of your life. Oahu is one of the best Islands to live on because you have both serinity on the North Shore and you have the Nightlife and big city life on the South Shore in Honolulu and Waikiki. Both fun when your in that certain mood. People often ask me if I get Island fever. The truth is no. I do get the urge to travel sometimes but thats how I am where ever I live. I always have the need to explore new things and broaden the horrizon to bigger and better things for my future. If you live life thinking you cannot go somewhere or cannot afford to do something you will never be able to. Your thoughts are just a preview on what is to come in life so always concentrate on the good things in your life and think positive and they will come to you. I encourage everyone to dream big. Go everywhere you want to go. Explore the world and meet new people and have exciting new experiences. Life is measure by memories. You can either have an amazing life or a boring average one. Its up to you.

California

After 2 years spent in Hawaii I decided to move to Cali. I have been here for a week now and I am loving it. The Laguna beach area is beautiful and I went to check out Trestles today and its an awesome surf break. I took these shots on the 5th of July at Dana Point Harbor and was quite pleased with them. I have prints and gallery wraps available on my new website at bradscottphoto.com Aloha
